What we treat as an emergency

If any of these is happening, call now. Don't wait for business hours. We dispatch a licensed master plumber or HVAC tech to confirmed emergencies twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays.

  • Burst pipe Water is actively running where it shouldn't be. Cut the main if you can, then call.
  • No water Faucets dry, tank empty, well not pumping. Could be the pump, the pressure tank, or a frozen line.
  • Gas smell Leave the building first. Call your gas utility from outside. Then call us once you're safe.
  • Frozen pipes Pipes frozen, not yet burst. We can thaw them before they split. Call before the temperature rises.
  • Water heater failure Leaking tank, no hot water in winter, or a relief valve discharging. All count.
  • No heat Furnace, boiler, or heat pump down with temperatures below freezing. Pets, kids, and pipes are at risk.
  • No AC in extreme heat Heat advisory days, elderly residents, or anyone medically vulnerable in the house. Don't tough it out.
BEFORE WE ARRIVE

What to do before we get there

Once you've called, a few small steps can stop the problem from getting worse. Only do what feels safe. If anything seems dangerous, leave the building and wait for us outside.

If anyone is injured, unconscious, or in immediate danger, call 911 first. Fire, active gas leak, electrical shock, or carbon monoxide symptoms all go to 911 before they go to us. We'll be there after the first responders.

  1. If you smell gas, leave the building and call your gas utility from outside before you call us.

    Eversource gas emergency: 1-800-922-1775. National Grid: 1-800-233-5325. Do not flip light switches, do not start a vehicle in an attached garage, do not light a flame. Get out, get to fresh air, then call the utility. Once you are safe and the utility has been notified, call Caswell.

  2. Shut off the water main if a pipe has burst or is actively leaking.

    The main shutoff is usually in the basement near where the water line enters the house, or near the well pressure tank if you are on a well. Turn the handle clockwise until it stops. If it won’t move, leave it and tell us when we arrive.

  3. Turn off the water heater if the tank is leaking.

    Gas tanks: rotate the gas control knob to OFF. Electric tanks: flip the breaker labeled “water heater” at the panel. Then shut the cold-water inlet valve at the top of the tank.

  4. Kill power to any wet appliance or fixture.

    If water has reached an outlet, a furnace, a boiler, a water heater, or a baseboard heater, switch off the breaker at the panel before you go near it. Do not stand in standing water while you do this. If the panel is in a flooded area, leave and wait for us.

  5. Open windows if there is a sewer backup or gas smell.

    Cross-ventilation helps. Stay out of the affected room until we get there.

  6. Move what you can move.

    Lift rugs, electronics, boxes, and anything else off the wet floor. Don’t break your back over it, but small wins now save big losses later.

  7. Unlock the route we'll need.

    Side gate, basement bulkhead, mechanical room, attic hatch, well pit cover. If we can’t reach the problem, the truck might as well be in Hartford.

  8. Crate the dogs and corral the cats.

    Our techs love dogs. The dogs do not always love techs in respirators carrying wet vacs at 2 a.m.

  9. Have your insurance carrier's claim number handy if it's a major loss.

    We can document what we find, but the claim is yours to start. The sooner the better.

  10. Stay on or near the phone after you call us.

    Dispatch may call you back to confirm the address, ask one or two diagnostic questions, or give you an arrival window. If we can’t reach you, we can’t roll.
